New Zealand Pioneer in Hockey equipment step up their game

Feb 25, 2026

Founded in 1994 by Simon Barnett, OBO set out with a clear objective: to become the best supplier of field hockey goalkeeper equipment. The company focused on delivering high quality protection products that would allow athletes to perform with confidence and improve their game.

Based in New Zealand, OBO has grown into the leading hockey equipment supplier worldwide, holding more than 75 percent of global market share. The company combines product innovation with strong attention to environmental responsibility and community values.

Innovation Driven Manufacturing

From the beginning, OBO experimented with different materials and carefully listened to player feedback. This approach led to the development of advanced protection equipment designed to improve safety, comfort, and performance for goalkeepers.

As part of its commitment to continuous improvement, OBO evaluates capital equipment carefully and invests in technology that supports both product quality and environmental performance.

The Challenge

When Simon discovered that waterjet cutting technology could support foam processing in their manufacturing workflow, he wanted to test its performance directly. The goal was to achieve cleaner cuts and improved edge quality compared to traditional blade cutting.

Technology Solution

After evaluating different manufacturers, OBO selected a Techni waterjet system equipped with the Quantum Electric Servo Pump. The decision was influenced by the machine design and the environmentally responsible electric servo pump technology, which reduces overall power requirements.

During testing, the improvement in foam cutting quality was clearly visible. Waterjet cutting produced smooth and consistent edges compared to the rough finish created by blade cutting.

Simon Barnett explained:

The design of Techni’s equipment with the Quantum Servo Pump technology to reduce the power requirement is what intrigued us at first. After the test cut and witnessing the results, we had no doubt it was going to be a perfect fit in our workshop.”

He added: “We are likeminded companies which share values and goals. We aim to be the best in what we do, we care about the environment, and we both act as pioneers in our industries.

By integrating waterjet cutting technology into its production process, OBO continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in hockey equipment manufacturing.
